Pokemon Red and Green had approximately 65,000 different versions instead of two

At one point, Game Freak thought there were more differences to the original Pokemon games. Earlier this week, Did You Know Gaming released a new video about the original Pokemon games, digging into some shadowy interviews with the original Game Freak development team to reveal some forgotten facts about the Pokemon franchise. One of the more interesting parts of the video is the revelation that Game Freak originally wanted the Pokemon games to have 65,000 different variations, each of which would have slight variations like what the forest looked like and which Pokemon would appear in the game. The concept was eventually dropped after speaking with Nintendo President Shigeru Miyamoto, who suggested making two different versions based on different colors instead.

The information comes from a 1996 book called PokeDex, Game Freak programmer Takenori Oota stated that the player’s Trainer ID number was originally intended to determine what Pokémon appeared in the game. “We also thought that each game would generate a random ID number the first time it was played and that number would determine which Pokemon appeared in the game,” Ota said.

In a different book, Satoshi Tajiri, creator of the Pokemon series, outlined the plans. “With the random selection of a cartridge ID, the Pokémon captured in those games will all carry that ID number, so as long as someone hasn’t traded with 65,000 different people, the odds of trading with someone with the same ID are unlikely,” Tajiri said. .

However, when explaining the concept to Miyamoto, the concept was eventually revised. “I talked to Miyamoto about how we get players to understand that every cartridge is different when they buy one, and he told me the system looked interesting, but was a bit hard to understand,” Tajiri said. “He said that if players couldn’t tell just by looking at it, it wouldn’t work and it would be better if the color or appearance of the games were different.”

Trainer IDs remained in Pokemon games and were eventually used in the formula that games used to determine whether a Pokemon was shiny.
